District Aizawl is one of the 11 districts of Mizoram, a state in India situated in the north-eastern part of the country, bounded by Myanmar (Burma) to the east and south, Bangladesh to the west and by the states of Tripura to the north-west, Assam to the north, and Manipur to the north-east, occupies an area of 3577 square kilometres.
The city Aizawl is the largest as well as the capital of the state, located at 3715 feet from the sea level lays just north of Tropic of Cancer with the Tlawng river valley to its west and the Tuirial river valley to its east. Majority of the population here speaks and understands Mizo, the official language of the state also known as 'Lusei/Lushai' or 'Duhlian'. Besides its breathtaking natural beauty, it is also the storehouse of all the Government offices, State Assembly and Civil Secreteriat.
The scenic capital of Mizoram, Aizawl has a very mild humid, sub-tropical climate due to its location and elevation. Temperature remain moderately warm during summer, averaging around 20–30°C where as in winter it usually averages around 11–21°C. The best time to visit here is between October to March as rainfall is mostly concentrated between the month of April and October, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in May, July, August and September.
At present there are no railways in Mizoram, the only way to reach Aizawl is through Lengpui, the nearest airport situated at around 32 kilometres from the main city which provides connectivity to some of the biggest cities in India viz. Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Imphal, Agartala, Shillong or via road through Silchar using National Highway 540 or through Agartala using National Highway 40 and lastly through Imphal using National Highway 150. The construction of broad gauge railway line between Mizoram border town Bairabi and Sairang near Aizawl is scheduled to be completed by 2022.
For domestic tourists to enter Mizoram an Inner Line Pass is required which can be obtained from all the above mentioned cities connected through the only airport or from the security officer on arrival at Lengpui airport. Government employees travelling for official work are exempted from obtaining the pass but they are required to carry a valid photo identity proof with them at all times. For foreign nationals, they have to register themselves at the office of Superintendent of Police, Mizoram who is the designated Foreigners Registration Officer (FRO) of the State within 24 hours of arrival. Citizens of Afghanistan, China and Pakistan would have to require a prior approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs before entering the state.
This beautiful hill city of Mizoram offers a variety of attractions, adventure activities to its tourists so that besides relaxing and observing the God's natural creation they can also have fun and enjoy with their loved ones. To start with, Humifang, a mountain with an elevation of 1619 metres is an absolute best place to see the typical rural life of the Mizos. It has beautiful cliffs and offers great views of the surrounding hills. For the nature lovers, the surrounding forests abound with fascinating varieties of flora including rare orchids and wildlife especially avifauna which makes this place a must visit in the state.
Tam Dil or popularly known as "Lake of Mustard" is another tourist attraction situated near Saitual Village, about 110 kms from Aizawl. Having been developed as an important pisciculture centre by the Fisheries Department, the lake and its surrounding thick forest are home to wide species of trees, plants and animals. Vantawng Khawhthla or Vantawng Fall, the highest and most spectacular of all the waterfalls and cascades in the fast flowing rivers of Mizoram is located at a distance of about 137 kilometres from Aizawl in Vanva river near Thenzawl and is named after Vantawnga who was said to be an excellent swimmer. The height of the fall is recorded as 750 ft and though it is difficult to get close to it because of the sheer forested hillsides surrounding it, a comfortable viewing tower has now been constructed.
To have a closer look at the typical rural life and culture of Mizos a visit to Falkawn is a must. It is a small village situated at around 18 kilometres south of the main city of Aizawl. Depicting the lifestyle of a Mizo village, the Art & Culture Department, Government of Mizoram Department has set up a Cultural Centre (Zokhua) at Falkawn in 1992. The centre is a mini live-museum where Zawlbuk (Dormitory), Lal In (Chief's House), Pum (Blacksmiths) and other Mizo typical houses are erected. Besides this there are freedom fighter memorial stones and Taitesena commemoration stone too. To do some sort of adventure activity, tourists can also explore the legends related to the various caves of Mizoram. Few of the most popular caves are Pukzing and Lamsial caves in the Aizwal district which offers interesting stories containing the relics of the past.
